The director and a teacher of a Columbia County preschool have been arrested after the teacher was accused of cruelty to children at the facility.
Shannon McCune, 27, was arrested on Dec. 22 on two counts of cruelty to children in the first degree with whom she worked at Foundations Christian Preschool on South Belair Road. The preschool’s director, Melinda Sue Williams, 34, was arrested and charged Tuesday with failure to report suspected child abuse.
In October, a Columbia County Sheriff’s Office investigator responded to two separate complaints by parents reporting bruises on their children who attended the preschool. According to the warrant issued on Dec. 22, McCune struck a 4-year-old with a flag pole, leaving bruises on the child’s back and grabbed a 5-year-old child by the arm and hit him with a yard stick on several occasions.
A separate warrant also issued on Dec. 22 states that Williams was told by a parent that a teacher was possibly physically abusing her child. Pictures of the child’s injuries were sent to Williams but no report was filed with police or the Division of Family and Children Services.
McCune was released on bond and is not permitted to be in contact with minors under 18 who are not related to her. Williams was also released on bond.
