A substitute teacher at an Imperial Beach high school was arrested Saturday on suspicion of engaging in sexual activity with a female student, a sheriff’s official said Monday.
A sheriff’s school resource officer at Mar Vista High School received information from students Friday that 48-year-old Martin Albert Gallegos, a Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps instructor at the Elm Street campus, was engaged in a sexual relationship with a student, authorities said.
The resource officer contacted the student who is a senior. The relationship appeared to have spanned several months.
“Once he started seeing there was some validity to these allegations, he called the sheriff’s sexual assault unit,” Lt. Dan Brislin said.
Sheriff’s detectives investigated the claims, and Gallegos was arrested the next day in San Carlos on suspicion of five counts of sexual conduct with a minor. Brislin said the charges did not include sexual intercourse.
The lieutenant said they have not received information about any other possible victims, but the investigation is ongoing.
“When you’re dealing with criminal cases where the person who’s charged is in a position of trust, we are particularly vigilant at looking into the matter to make sure there aren’t other victims out there,” Brislin said.
